Tarot Spread: Ann Marie Burr

I have always been fifty-fifty on whether Ted Bundy took little Ann Marie. He lived close by and he seemed to have known her family, although how well he knew them is up for debate. But he was just fourteen years old when she went missing. As tragic as it is for a child to go missing, people do not wish to think about a child being murdered by another youngster.

The information below is piled from the Charley Project.

Ann Marie was last seen in her home in the 3000 block of north 14th Street in Tacoma, Washington on August 31, 1961. She shared her bedroom with her three-year-old sister, who had a broken arm at the time. In the middle of the night, Ann Marie brought her sister to their parents' room because the younger girl's cast was bothering her and she was crying. Their parents told them to go back to bed. Ann Marie has never been heard from again.

Ann Marie's mother got up at 5:30 a.m. and discovered her daughter was missing. The front door had been locked and chained the evening before, but Ann Marie's mother found it unlocked from the inside and open.

There was a small living room window they had kept open a few inches, and in the morning it was found opened wider, with a piece of red thread stuck in the jam. A garden bench had been taken from behind the house and put in front of the window.

A faint footprint was found outside the open window. It had been distorted by the previous night's heavy rainstorm, but authorities believe it was from a Keds sneaker, size 6 or 7. A small man or a teenager would have feet that size. A similar footprint was found in the back of the house by the basement window.

There was no sign of Ann Marie anywhere and no sign of a struggle in her bedroom. Her sister and her two brothers who slept in the basement had not been disturbed, but the family's dog had barked that night. Ann Marie's parents had heard it and assumed it was scared of the storm. Neighbors reported that in the days prior to Ann Marie's disappearance, they had seen someone in their yard, peering into their windows, but they couldn't describe the person.

1.       Queen of Pentacles, reversed. Narrow-minded, selfish, immoral, greedy, insecure, mistrust.

This first card indicates that Ann trusted someone and they betrayed her. While I do consider Bundy to be a strong suspect from what we know about him, I think of Robert Bruzas. It has not been confirmed how well Bundy knew Ann’s family, while Robert Bruzas lived just two doors down from the Burrs. Either way, Ann knew her killer. Something that sticks out to me is that the Queen of Pentacles covers the period between December 13th and January 9th, which includes Ann’s birthday.

2.       Ten of Cups, reversed. Discord at home, sorrow, disruptions to family life, a child leaving home.

This card could have referred to Ann’s abduction, but it might be talking about her life at home. She faced sorrow, which may have come from trusting the wrong person.

3.       Five of Wands. Unrest, unease, being challenged, a sham fight, brainstorming, problem solving, sexual arousal, young men hanging out together.

A rather troubling card for this reading. There may have been a fight. Perhaps the wool had been pulled from Ann’s eyes and she saw that the person she trusted was cruel. Or maybe she was tired and wanted to go home. Either way, she had become unhappy.

4.       The Empress. Fruitfulness, doubt, ignorance. Solving problems creatively. Mothers, homemakers.

Could the ignorance mean that her killer was overlooked, possibly during the initial search? Perhaps people did not want to believe that he was responsible. This could mean one of two things. That her killer was someone in her family or inner circle, or that he was quite young. Considering the suspects, I believe that it is a combination of the two. There is a forest depicted in the card, alongside a river.

5.       Page of Pentacles. A student or undergraduate, apprentice, school friend, youngster, projects involving research or study. A young male with dark hair and possibly brown eyes.

While I do not wish to be judgemental whenever I read the Tarot, all signs DEFINITELY seem to point to Bundy, especially as the fifth card represents what the Querent – Ann – is currently moving through. Remember that the Tarot is not limited by the boundaries of time, so ‘current’ or ‘present’ in this case mean what happened to her after she was kidnapped from her room.

6.       Six of Swords. Journey by water, route, way, relocation, successfully navigating a difficult period.

I wonder if this card – as the sixth card suggests the future – might mean that Ann will be found, despite the odds. I wonder if her body was thrown into the bay or some other body of water. There are also islands in the card, which make me think of the bay.

7.       Ten of Pentacles. Abundance, wealth, family stability, prosperity, treasures found, family loyalty. Historians, genealogists, home builders, homemakers.

I think that this card also shows promise when it comes to finding Ann. It seems as if people from the Tacoma area may decide to look back on what they know and try another direction. The ‘treasure’ that may be found could be Ann.

8.       High Priestess. Secrets, mystery, a future unrevealed, silence, wisdom, science, morality.

There is a ‘B’ and a ‘J’ on the two pillars either side of the High Priestess. I truly think that the evidence is piling up against Bundy. This card represents the environment around the Querent, so with the information gathered from the Page of Pentacles, I am confident in saying that Bundy was responsible. As this card indicates things that are not yet revealed, I think that advances in science might be able to identify Ann, if her body or partial remains have already been found, or help to detect her body.

9.       Ace of Cups. Joy, content, happiness, abundance, love in its purest sense.

The ninth card signifies the Querent’s hopes and fears. She must want her family to be able to feel joy again. She clearly loves them very much. The card shows water pouring out from a cup and into a body of water with lily pads. Maybe Ann is not in the bay at all, but in a pond or lake. A quick search on Google Maps shows that a pond in Wright Park, less than half an hours’ walk away from Ann’s house, has islands in the middle. Could it truly be possible that Ann or some other evidence is inside the lake? Now, I am not suggesting that we go out and drench the pond, but it is something to think about.

10.   Knight of Pentacles, reversed. Illness, stagnation, carelessness, missed or withdrawn opportunities, neglecting responsibilities, heavy handed.

I get the feeling from this card that some people think that it is not worth looking at this case and that her body can never be found. This is not the case. It is possible to find Ann’s body. Whether or not I am right and she is in the pond in Wright Park, I think that she can be brought home.

Operation Anagram: April Fabb

Operation Anagram: April Fabb

The first rune is Othala, merkstave. Lack of customary order, totalitarianism, slavery, poverty, homelessness, bad karma, prejudice, clannishness, provincialism, what a person can be bound to, in a contract.
This just confuses me. The idea of clannishness and provincialism, the two meaning the characteristics of a clan and one’s own group and provincialism meaning narrow-minded, or something from a province, a territorial unit, could make me think that April was someone who’d been ‘country’ and possibly never left Norfolk in her life. Also, these were the 1960s and even though it happened after the Moors Murderers, she was in a carefree place, where it didn’t seem bad things would happen.

The second rune is Uruz, reversed. Weakness, obsession, directed force, domination by others, sickness, ignorance, lust, brutality, rashness, violence.

These could easily describe both Tobin and Black, but the sickness makes me think again of how Tobin faked illness after a murder. Tobin, at the time I believe, also had some control over what would become his first wife, but at the very least, I believe he killed before. The idea of obsession is that Tobin didn’t plan to take Vicky and Dinah. He just saw two innocent young girls he could take advantage of. The ignorance could have been April deciding to stop to let her kidnapper through or  going back when noticing the vehicle was close to her.

The third rune is Ehwaz, reversed. A change might be craved, feeling restless or confined in a situation, reckless haste, disharmony, mistrust, betrayal. It’s interesting to note that ehwaz means ‘horse’ or ‘two horses’, transport.

This could be that Tobin had had older women before; Esther Mersy was 27, Patricia Docker, the first Bible John victim, was 26. This would have been a much younger victim, someone easy to control physically. He could have a yearning to have wanted a younger victim. The betrayal could be Tobin tricking April, perhaps asking for directions to a town or petrol station, before pulling her in, or maybe, if he’d started seeing his girlfriend yet, a sort of relationship betrayal.

The fourth rune is Isa. A challenge or frustration, psychological blocks to thought and activity, a time to turn inward and wait for what is to come. This rune enforces runes around it.
Some time before I did a reading for April, I pulled a single rune out asking where she was. I got Isa. That meant she is dead, sadly.

Maybe, as I said, being a country girl, she simply sat still and waited. Maybe he had a weapon. Maybe she was scared and waited. This IS how some rape victims react, not all fight back. The girl waited for her fate.
I cannot imagine how terrified April must have been. They didn’t teach sex education in the sixties and like I said, she’d probably never left Norfolk in her life and this was the sort of place I guess people left their doors unlocked. It would have been the same for the victims of the Moors.

The fifth rune is Thurisaz, merkstave. Danger, defencelessness, hatred, torment, spite, lies. A bad man or woman. Wherever April went after being picked up, she would have been assaulted almost immediately. Most children that are abducted are likely to be abused within three hours. The torment may be actual torment, or mental. Something horrible that makes me think it is Tobin is he physically tormented his first wife, so much that she was unable to have children.

The sixth rune is Raidho, merkstave. Crisis, rigidity, stasis, injustice, irrationality, disruption, dislocation, possibly death. The rigidity could be her actual body going rigid, the injustice is obvious, but dislocation could either mean her body being moved from where she died or what he did with his first wife. Another reason to make me say her murderer is Tobin.

The seventh rune is Kenaz, merkstave. Disease, breakup, nakedness, exposure, loss of illusion and false hope. It might be an indication that April will be found without her clothes, but also that maybe she realised she was dead. She might have told herself it was fine, she wasn’t dead, but realised what really happened. This can happen, especially if they die quickly or murdered.

The eighth rune is Nauthiz. Delays, restrictions, resistance leading to strength, distress, confusion, conflict and the power of will to overcome them. Survival, determination, accepting one’s fate, patience, self-initiated change. This could go back to her thinking that if she did what her kidnapper said, he wouldn’t hurt her. But it could be road restrictions. After all, a lot of people were in East Anglia over the bank holiday. Her murderer may have been distressed and desperate to get away, giving themselves patience in waiting in lines. The self-initiated change again makes me think of Tobin, as this would be a change of killing outside his ‘comfort area’ of Glasgow and to aim for younger victims.

Something interesting to note when looking at possible Tobin victims is they get younger over time. For instance, Patricia Docker was 26, Jemima McDonald, the second Bible John victim, was 32, Helen Puttock was 29. Barbara Mayo was 24. But near the end of the line, Louise Kay was 18, as was Dinah McNicol. The two victims in 1993 were 14. It is entirely possible that taking April made Tobin decide he could take teenage victims – Jackie Ansell-Lamb, just under a year later, was 18.

The last rune is Ingwaz. Male fertility, gestation, internal growth. Common virtues, common sense, simple strengths, family love, caring. The home. Rest stage. A time of relief, no anxiety, a time to move in a new direction. The home makes me think that the reason April has not been found is she is buried in or near Tobin’s home in early 1969. The rest stage also makes me think that his desire was fulfilled and he had satisfied his urges. Male fertility could connect to his sexuality; internal growth to confidence. After all, if I am right, this was Tobin’s third murder and now he would be confident. As I said, the new direction was younger victims.

As such, I will list possible places both in Norfolk and Glasgow.

Iron, rain, clouds, beast, moors. Giant, cliff, thorn. Funeral homes. Flame. Prince. Burn. Frost, heart, salvation. Glass. Wave. House. Sea. East.

Operation Anagram: Esther Mersy

Operation Anagram: Esther Mersy

Some people believe that Tobin is responsible for the Bible John murders of 1968-69. While I do agree, maybe they weren't his first.

I will do Operation Anagram in random order, but I thought it fitting to start with who he may have murdered first.

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/family-of-missing-esther-mersy-fear-1003293

Esther was twenty-seven and married when she vanished on November 29th 1965, from Port Glasgow, near where Tobin lived. He was nineteen.

serial killers tend to start in their late teens or early twenties, so this is a good estimate.

Her disappearance holds similarities to his known crimes; she was a petite brunette, involved with her church, her handbag and coat found at a bus shelter some miles from her home, her money was withdrawn from her account.

Now, let me look at the runes.

'Merkstave' means 'reversed'.

The first rune is ‘Algiz’, reversed. Hidden danger, consumption by divine forces, loss of divine link. Warning, turning away, that which repels.

The second rune is ‘Kenaz’, disease, breakup, instability, lack of creativity, nakedness, exposure, loss of illusion, false hope. This could mean, obviously if it was a sexual assault, nakedness and exposure. Does this mean she had false hope by thinking her attacker would let her go?

The third rune is ‘Sowilo’, merkstave. False goods, bad counsel, false success, gullibility, loss of goals, destruction, retribution, justice, casting down of vanity, wrath of God. How these could mean Esther I have no idea, but ‘false success’ could mean Tobin was pleased he had managed to get his ‘prey’, his ‘kill’, but as it was not for good intentions, mean false success?

The fourth rune is ‘Perthro’, reversed. Something we need to remember is this means ‘lot cup’ or ‘vagina’. Somewhere where she could have been held or attacked, or maybe more sexual indications? Addiction, stagnation, loneliness, malaise. These all mean some kind of depression, so maybe Tobin was depressed or Esther was depressed? Loneliness as in he didn’t think he could get advantages? After all, he’d been in biker gangs and was known to police, had spent time in young offenders’ institutions. Maybe he wanted to take rage out on someone?

The fifth rune is ‘jera’, merkstave. Sudden setback, reversals, a major change, repetition, bad timing, poverty, conflict. Did Esther have money issues or her family? The major change, is, of course, if this was his first murder then he would realise he would go down that path. Maybe he liked the idea of assaulting and terrorising a female victim enough to repeat?

This is extremely likely to have happened if he did take young Esther and at nineteen, he would have felt an enormous sense of fear, wondering what he’d done, if he did wonder, to see this was his life, a murderer.

The sixth rune is ‘Hagalaz’, merkstave. Natural disaster, catastrophe, loss of power, pain and suffering, hardship, sickness, crisis. A catastrophe for Esther, the loss of power and the pain and suffering must be what she felt when Tobin attacked her. The sickness, of course, may represent Tobin’s faking illness. He could have gone to a hospital soon afterward and faked an illness.

The seventh rune is the blank rune. Unfortunately, since historically blank runes were not used, this might not mean anything, but I do know it means that this is in the universe’s hands.

The eighth rune is ‘Ingwaz’, merkstave. Impotence, movement without change, toil, production, labour, work. Maybe it could mean she tried fending off her attacker but failed? It could fit with false hope. The labour and work could either mean working hard to find somewhere to hide the body or digging to bury her.

The ninth rune is ‘ehwaz’, reversed. A change can be craved, restless or confined in a situation, reckless haste, disharmony, mistrust, betrayal. Maybe he had asked her for directions or maybe he had convinced her to trust him? She was walking to the shop so it’s likely he would have stopped her.

The last rune is ‘thurisaz’, merkstave. Danger, defencelessness, compulsion, betrayal, dullness, evil, malice, hatred, torment, spite, lies. It can mean an evil man or woman, which I have to say, without any doubt, Tobin certainly is. It could also mean rape, so I conclude that this was a sexual crime and since Tobin lived in the area, it seems more and more likely that he committed this crime.

The thing is, if he did, he wouldn’t have waited twenty-six years to kill Vicky.

So, I decide to look where she could be.

Thorn, giant. Torch, maybe a hospital sort of place, flame, perhaps burns? Hail, heaven (church?), wind, water (makes sense as her handbag and coat were found by a beach), sun, light or ice. Fishes or bath. Horses. East, sea. Harvest. Pear. Earth. Elk, yew, blood.

Maybe she is buried near the coastline or maybe near a farm? Remember, these are not 100% accurate BY LAW.
